Financial Literacy

KCCD is the premier advocate and partner for increasing financial literacy in the Korean/Asian American community. Due to the differences between the U.S. financial system and that of South Korea, much of the Korean and Korean American community is unfamiliar with the importance of building a credit history and fails to utilize the financial tools available.  As a result, many Korean and Korean Americans consumers and business owners end up relying solely on a cash-only system and are susceptible to fraud and predatory lending practices. In order to address the lack of linguistically and culturally sensitive information, KCCD partnered with FDIC and served as the lead community partnering organization responsible for the Korean translation, review, and roll out of FDIC’s Korean Money Smart curriculum.

In addition, KCCD was also invited by Freddie Mac to serve as a partnering organization in the development and translation and distribution of their CreditSmart Asian program.

From Freddiemac.com

CreditSmart Asian is a three-part series of multilingual guidebooks focused on helping Asian Americans become more informed consumers. Available in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and English, the guidebooks provide valuable and culturally relevant information on establishing and maintaining good credit, the steps to homeownership, and the benefits and responsibilities of owning a home.

The series begins with The Importance of Good Credit, based largely on Freddie Mac's award-winning CreditSmart curriculum. Steps to Homeownership walks the consumer through the process, from loan application to post-closing, dispelling common myths and building the consumer's confidence along the way. Homeowner Benefits and Responsibilities provides priceless information on protecting the home investment through home maintenance, money management, and avoiding financial traps.

  • Introduction to Credit
  • How to Choose a Checking Account
  • Budgeting
  • Consumer Rights
  • Leveraging Credit and Credit History
  • Homeownership
